Three Minutes on the Phone. You Already Know.

Three Minutes on the Phone. You Already Know.

The phone rings while you’re driving or in the middle of a job. The call takes three, maybe four minutes. In those three minutes you decide whether tomorrow’s four hours belong to this person.

And all you have is a voice.

Four ways to keep you from seeing the work

Just give me a price. He doesn’t ask when you can come out. He asks what it’ll cost. You haven’t seen anything yet, but he’s waiting on a number. Say the number, and it becomes the price. Not an estimate, not a ballpark. The price. By the time you get there and see what’s actually going on, it’s too late to change — he heard the first number, and that’s the only one he remembers.

I’ll send photos. Why drive out, here’s a video, take a look and let me know. Except in a photo you see exactly what he decided to show you. The frame is cropped, and what’s outside it you will never see. Not the damp corner, not what’s under that tile, not how anyone is supposed to get material in there. You’ll price a picture. You’ll work a house.

I needed it yesterday. He doesn’t ask whether you have room in the schedule. He says come today. Today is Sunday. He didn’t ask if you work weekends, whether you have a family, plans, another job running. He called — so the matter is settled, all that’s left is for you to show up.

I’ve got a lot of work for you. This is just the start: do the bathroom and there’s the kitchen, then the basement, and he’s got a rental too. So give him a good price, think of it as an investment. The work usually doesn’t come. What comes is this one job at a discount, and then he’s gone, or he found someone cheaper.

But that’s not what to listen for

All of that is about money. The thing that matters most on that call has nothing to do with money.

Listen for whether you exist in what he’s saying. Not a contractor who shows up and does the work — a person with a schedule, weekends, things of his own.

If your time doesn’t exist for him now, it won’t start existing later. Someone who thinks nothing of calling you out on a Sunday will think nothing of paying you when it suits him. Not out of malice. His problem is solved; yours was never a problem.

This isn’t about bad people. It’s that how someone treats your time is audible in the first minute, and it doesn’t change after that.

Three minutes cost less than four hours. That’s what they’re for.

The call tells you about the person. It tells you nothing about the house.

StarProve gives you what someone else already knows, in three taps. Every log is tied to the property address, never to a person, and only license-verified contractors can read or write one.

Three minutes on the phone, five before you turn the key. That’s the whole cost of not walking in blind.
